An anode comprising a natural or refined sugar binder is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) production of the above anode by mixing ground and sieved petroleum coke and residual anode butts with sugar at 150-250 deg C; and (ii) aluminum manufacture using the above anode. Preferred Features: The sugar is brown sugar, VHP sugar, granulated sugar, candy sugar or refined sugar. The anode contains 50-70 wt.% petroleum coke, 15-30 wt.% butts and 10-25 wt.% sugar.
