Each turbine (3,4,5) has a 4-bladed rotor (13,14,15), mounted in line with the other rotors, all driving a common alternator (10). The conical turbine casings (7,8,9) are convergent in the flow direction, and at the exit end are further constricted in cross-section by a coaxially mounted core (11). The resultant pressure reduction is transmitted by a duct (16) to the downstream side (17) of the first rotor (13), augmenting the existing pressure drop across the rotor. The core diameter is variable, to regulate this effect, also utilized to assist start-up. After traversing the third rotor, the working fluid (air that has been heated (28) by fossil fuel burners at appropriate points), is re-injected (24), partly through the overall turbine casing (25), into the entry zone of the first turbine (2) and partly (26), after cooling in a bank of heat exchangers (27), into a head compartment (23) supplying the entry zone. The exchangers' secondary fluid supplies external thermal demand. Turbine casings are heated (20), via heat exchangers, from solar panels (21), backed by a standby fossil fuel source (22). An open-cycle variant using wind energy is also described.
