The device is attached directly to the USB plug, creating plug and reader within a single unit. The portable reader includes a plug fitting (2) for connection to the USB port of a computer. The plug fitting has four conducting terminals (8,9,10,11) in addition to a part (4) for the removal of a module (5) which is removable and capable of storing personal information. The plastic module has specific dimensions (25 mm long, 15 mm wide and 0.76 mm thick) and carries an integrated circuit chip with contact pads which are electrically connected to contact pads which are flush with one of the surfaces of the module. The additional section of the USB plug has pins which make contact with these pads for direct communication between the integrated circuit of the module, and the USB port terminals of the computer.
