Selective desulfurization of thiophene compounds contained in hydrocarbons derived from crude oil by oxidation of the sulfur atoms in the thiophene compounds to sulfones using a turbulent hydrocarbon/water two phase system where the oxidizing agent is a peroxide or persulfate. Selective desulfurization of thiophene compounds contained in hydrocarbons derived from crude oil by oxidation of the sulfur atoms in the thiophene compounds to sulfones using a turbulent hydrocarbon/water two phase system where the oxidizing agent/agents is/are soluble in at least one of the phases and are chosen from organic (hydro)peroxides, hydrogen peroxide, peracids and persulfates of alkaline and alkaline-earth metals, which are soluble or dispersed in a liquid or in a solid form. The product is separated simultaneously with the oxidation. An INDEPENDENT claim is included for the application of the desulfurization process to gasoline kerosene and petroleum from catalytic cracking processes.
