In operation deionized water is pumped around the fuel cell (12) and heat exchanger (18) excess heat being lost through a secondary motor (10) cooling circuit (42,44,54) and radiator (48). When the vehicle is stopped the deionized water is removed from the fuel cell and stored in a thermally insulated storage tank (28) for return when the vehicle restarts.
