Method involves detection (3) of the direction of chain (K) movement, and controlling the gear change operation between either forward gear wheels or rear gear wheels. The method is based on detection of the angular position of forward or rear gear wheels and controlling the gear change such that it occurs at an optimum angular position. An Independent claim is made for a gear change system comprising sensors (2, 3) for detecting chain movement and angular position of gear wheels and a control unit (6) that commands automatic gear changes. The gear change system acting in conjunction with actuators for moving the appropriate gear change mechanism.
