Metal-inert-gas and metal-active-gas welding of tubular components involves positioning a flange jutting out from lateral surface of the edge of one component into recess in lateral surface of edge of other component
Metal-inert-gas and metal-active-gas welding of tubular components involves positioning a flange jutting out from lateral surface of the edge of one component into recess in lateral surface of edge of other component
The edges (1, 2) of the two metallic parts (5, 6) are welded to form a joint (10). Prior to welding, at least one part of a flange (7) that juts out from the lateral surface (11) of edge (1) is positioned into part of a recess (8) in the lateral surface (12) of edge (2). The parts are welded at the edges while keeping the flange at least partially positioned in the recess. Preferred Features: The lateral surfaces (11, 12) of preferably both edges (1, 2) comprise an oblique portion (21, 22) forming an angle of 10-80 degrees with respect to the plane of the joint. The angle is preferably 15-60 degrees, more preferably 15-45 degrees. The edges (1, 2) are welded in 1-3 welding passes. Filler metal is in the form of a consumable wire electrode. The depth (d2) of the recess (8) is 0.1-4.8 mm, preferably 0.2-2 mm. The distance (d) between the front-end (7a) and the back-end (7c) of the flange (7) is 1.5-7 mm, preferably 2.2-5 mm. The height of the flange (7) and/or the height (H') of the recess is 0.1-4 mm, preferably 0.4-1 mm. The edges (1, 2) of the components (5, 6) have a thickness of at least 2 mm, preferably 3-10 mm. Independent claims are given for: (a) a method of welding two components having tubular ends; (b) a welded assembly comprising the two components having tubular ends; and (c) a process for preparing the two components for welding.
