New variety of salt containing at least 95 wt.% of sodium chloride and having wt. loss on heating to 500 deg C for 24 hours less than 1200 mg/kg, is obtained by heating sodium chloride powder to 380-480 deg C for 20-90 minutes. The method of determining water content of salt from wt. loss under heating to above 450 deg C, for 24 hours, is also new. Independent claims are also included for 1) use of salt as claimed for preparation of compositions for therapeutic application; 2) process of production of salt as claimed, comprising subjecting sodium chloride powder to drying at temperature higher than 300 deg C and lower than 600 deg C (preferably 380-480 deg C, for 20-90 minutes; and 3) method of determining water content in sample of salt, based on measuring wt. loss on drying, with the latter conducted at temperature above 450 deg C, for at least 24 hours.
