A liquid crystal display device (I) is claimed. (I) comprises a liquid crystal cell (II) and at least one compensation film (III) or a combination of polarisers (IV) and optical compensators (V) comprising at least one (III). (III) comprises at least one layer of an anisotropic polymer (VI) obtainable by (co)polymerisation of a mixture of a polymerisable mesogenic material (VII) comprising: (A) at least one mesogen having at least one polymerisable function group in the presence of (B) an initiator; (C) optionally a non-mesogenic compound having two or more polymerisable functional groups and (D) optionally a stabilizer. (VI) has a homeotropic or tilted homeotropic molecular orientation. Also claimed is (III) which is obtainable by: (a) coating (VII) onto at least one substrate (VIII) in the form of a layer; (b) aligning (VII) in a homeotropic or tilted homeotropic orientation; (c) polymerizing (VII) by exposing it to heat or actinic radiation; (d) optionally repeating steps (a)-(c) and (e) optionally removing one or both (VIII) from the polymerised (VII).
