Ribbon leader having magnetic elements incorporated therein for attachment of the leader to a magnetically charged drum

The leader has a tip end section which extends from a main section 1 of the leader, and includes first and second outermost layers 5,7 which sandwich at least one intermediate layer 4 in which magnetic or magnetically attractable elements 2a-e are inserted. Rearward portions of the outermost layers overlie and sandwich the adjoining end of the main section, and are bonded thereto by adhesive layers 10a, 10c. In use, the leader is wound about a storage drum (15,Fig.3) by mutual co-operation between a releasable hoop-and-loop fastening attachment 8,9 (e.g. Velcro (RTM)) on the leader. The attachment is broken by the magnetic attraction of the elements 2a-e towards a magnetic drum (16,Fig.3) and the tip end is drawn towards the surface of the drum, from which it is driven to a roller (18) with a central hub (20) of magnetic discs. The leader may include a spacer to limit damage to the fastening attachment. The leader may be used to hold pre-printed insert publications in position on to the drum 15 before insertion into separately produced newspapers or magazines.
