A device which comprises a single conducting plate held in a vacuum upon which light shines. One side of the plate is smooth and reflective and the other side is provided with slots or recesses in the surface. The slots or recesses are preferably of the magnitude of the skin depth of the conductive material. Forces due to photon pressure act on each side of the plate; a net force being created due to the photons not entering the slots or recesses due to the ration of the photon's wavelength and the diameter of the slots/recesses. Forces due to photon pressure are discussed in relation top the Casimir effect.
