A thin film 17 that forms an interface between metal surfaces and polymeric or elastomeric inserts of aircraft engine fan blades 10 is formed from a composition comprised of carbon black, at least one evaporable solvent, a combination of phenolic-like resins dissolved in the solvent and the balance filler and inert ingredients. The thin film, upon drying of the evaporable solvent, forms a phenolic that bonds with the metallic portion 10 of the fan blade. After polymeric/elastomeric material of the inserts is applied to recesses 12 in the fan blade and cured, a chemical cross linked bond is formed between the thin film and the inserts. The bonded structure has improved peak flatwise tensile stresses and improved fracture toughness. Material compositions, surface preparation methods, curing times and temperatures and manufacturing methods are disclosed.
