PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the public key certificate management method in the authentication system where a storage capacity of areas is reduced and public key certificates in various states are simply and surely retrieved. ;SOLUTION: A public key certificate being an object of invalidate processing or validity period expiration is read from a public key certificate storage area 8, a user name, a public key certificate number and a validity date are added to the public key certificate and the public key certificate with the information above added thereto is stored in a secondary storage medium 12 in this system. In the case that the public key certificate is read by the invalidate processing, the information relating to the public key certificate is registered in an invalidate list 10 and in the case that the public key certificate is read as a validity period expiration object, the public key certificate is deleted from the public key certificate storage area 8 and when the public key certificate is registered in the invalidate list 10, the information relating to the public key certificate registered in the invalidate list 10 is deleted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
