PURPOSE: To prevent the escape of tri-, tetra-halogenomethane, particularly a reaction product of the hydrochlorination of an aq. alkaline hypohalite of an organic compound by completely decomposing by hydrolytically decomposing method without generating carbon monoxide. ;CONSTITUTION: A halogen-containing compound expressed by a formula, CX₄ or CHX₃ (X represents Cl or Br) or their mixture, particularly an aq. alkaline reaction mixture containing the reaction product of the hydrochlorination of the aq. alkaline hypohalite of the organic compound is kept at 0-100°C for up to 10 hr under an autogenous pressure in a closed reactor. Next, the mixture is heat-treated at 0-100°C, preferably 90-120°C under an autogenous pressure in the presence of aq. solution of a sulfite, preferably an alkali metal sulfite, an alkaline earth metal sulfite, an alkali metal hydrogen sulfite or their mixture, particularly sodium sulfite or sodium hydrogen sulfite to hydrolytically decompose the halogen-containing compound to prevent the pollution due to a waste gas, a waste water or a purification residue.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
