PURPOSE:To facilitate selecting a xenon lamp or a halogen lamp and to enable effective utilization of light sources while controlling a rise in temperature of a front-end portion of an electronic endoscope. CONSTITUTION:Due to the rotation of a rotating board 24, the switching and selection of a halogen lamp 25 or a xenon lamp 31 can be made, and when the xenon lamp 31 is selected, a diaphragm 21 is switched to, e.g. between two values of diaphragm A1 and A2 and driven. For example, when the shutter speed at the diaphragm value A1 is slower than 1/60 sec., it is switched to the diaphragm value A2, and when the shutter speed at the diaphragm value A2 is faster than 1/200, it is switched to the diaphragm value A1. On the other hand, when the halogen lamp 25 is selected, the diaphragm 21 is driven to an open value to enable supplying the lamp light constantly by the maximum opening amount.
