PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for rapidly and efficiently reducing iron oxide in a rotary hearth heating furnace (RHF) and an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: Compacts 32 are supplied on the furnace hearth of the RHF 34 in the depth at no more than two layers and exposed at about 1315 - about 1430 deg.C with a radiation heat source for about 1-3 min in a first period to remove all volatile matter. Then, the compacts are charged in the oxidizing atmosphere, in which sufficient quantity of free oxygen exists, and a large part of combustible gas generated from the compact 32 is burnt and also, combustion gas is generated. Successively, the compact is exposed at about 1310 - about 1430 deg.C with the radiation heat source in the atmosphere, in which the free oxygen does not exist, for about 3-9 min in a second period and metallized. The metallized iron product is producted and discharged so that the gas and the compact 32 is fluidized as the parallel current during the first period and as the counter current during the second period.
