PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermetallic-compound superconductor and an alloy superconductor having high superconducting transition temperature, excellent malleability and ductility, and low normal conducting resistivity over the temperature region from superconducting transition temperature to room temperature, and also to provide a method for manufacturing these superconductors by which reproducibility can be improved and manufacturing cost can be reduced. SOLUTION: The quite new intermetallic-compound superconductor consisting of magnesium(Mg) and beryllium(Be) is represented by the formula Mg1 Be2 and has hexagonal AlB2 -type crystal structure and has 35 K superconducting transition temperature (Tc ). The alloy containing the intermetallic compound has excellent malleability and ductility and 35 K superconducting transition temperature (Tc ) and has low normal conducting resistivity over the temperature region from superconducting transition temperature to room temperature. These superconductors can be manufactured by mixing Mg-containing raw-material powder and Be-containing raw-material powder and subjecting the resultant powder mixture, e.g. to hot pressing.
