PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surveying instrument in which the replacement and the direction adjustment of a reflecting prism are automated, which eliminates an erroneous collimating operation and an erroneous measurement due to reflected light and by which the position of an excavator can be measured quickly and with high accuracy by a method wherein the reflecting prism is provided at the top part of a total station in which an electronic transit and an electronic distance meter are integrated. ;SOLUTION: In a surveying instrument 1, a reflecting prism 3 is fixed to the top part of a total station 1 in such a way that its optical axis is crossed, at 90°, with the optical axis of a telescope 4. In the total station 2, the telescope 4 is swiveled within a range of a prescribed horizontal angle and a prescribed vertical angle, laser light is radiated and scanned, and a horizontal angle, a vertical angle and a distance are measured automatically when reflected laser light from a reflecting prism at the top part of another surveying instrument 1 is received. Then, when surveying instruments 1 are installed inside a pipe body at prescribed intervals according to an excavating operation, the reflection of telescopes at the front and rear surveying instruments 1 is avoided, beams of reflected light from the reflecting prisms 3 are captured by the intermediate surveying instrument 1, and a horizontal included angle, a vertical angle and a distance which are formed by the front, intermediate and rear surveying instruments 1 can be measured automatically.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
