PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a vaccine containing a polypeptide that is safe and effective to human being to prevent HSV infection, and to provide a method for treating diseases caused by the infection. SOLUTION: An immunogenic truncated HSV-2 polypeptide that contains an HSV-2 VP16 immunogenic epitope and is capable of inducing the cellular immunological response for treating and/or preventing HSV infection and a recombinant polynucleotide encoding the polypeptide are provided. A recombinant expression vector containing the polynucleotide and a host cell transformed by this recombinant expression vector are also provided.
