PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an amplifier with low-noise wide band by adding halide glass, calcogenide glass or halogen oxide glass in the core part of a optical waveguide with Er and Ce. ;SOLUTION: Ce has a wide transmission area of 0.3 to 2.5μm, and it hardly gives no absorption loss to an exciting light of 0.98μm and a signal light of 1.55μm. Consequently, it can be added in a large quantity, and the interatomic distance between Er and Ce is made small to increase the degree of cross release. The quantity of addition of Er is preferably within a range of 0.01 to 10wt.%, which depends on the glass composition, and if the quantity is out of the range, amplification action cannot be obtained. The quantity of addition of Ce is preferably within a range of 0.01 to 30wt.%, and if the quantity is 0.01wt.%, no effect is expected, and if it is 30wt.%, crystallization occurs. Even if a sensitizer such as Yb, Ho, Nd, etc., is added to utilize the exciting light more effectively, the process of cross release process is hardly changed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
