PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data communication unit suitably applicable to a tele- gong service or the like, its incoming reply detection method, a program, and a ballot totalizing system using it.;SOLUTION: In a modem 1 used for a set-top box for e.g. a CS/BS digital TV tuner or the like, after dialing to a designated destination from a system control (host 5) of the set-up box, a polarity detection section 8 detects a result of detection of a line polarity inversion by a polarity detection circuit 4, a reply detection section 9 detects the reception (reply) of an opposite party on the basis of the result of detection and a result notice section 10 informs the host 65 about the result so as to reduce the load on the host controlling the modem 1 together with the hardware resources of the host 5.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
