PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-dimensional wavelet decomposing method, a hierarchically encoding transmission method and a hierarchically decoding method for a three-dimensional image by which a three-dimensional image can be transmitted faster than by a conventional method, and at a receiver side, the size of a required three-dimensional image can be controlled independently in x, y and z directions to display the image stereoscopically and hierarchically.;SOLUTION: The wavelet decomposition of the three-dimensional image is performed by an initial value setting in step S1 and three-dimensional decomposition in step S2. In the wavelet decomposition step, the three-dimensional image formed by overlapping two-dimensional images P1, P2, P3 through Pn existing in x and y spaces are recursively wavelet-decomposed in all the regions including low frequency in terms of independent directions of x, y and z.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
