PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber for detecting damage which enables specifying of a damage area of a member and a construction to be measured by a very handy measurement using an inexpensive optical fiber for communication, for example, by determining the state of detecting light passing through the optical fiber, namely, whether the transmission light is measured or not or by measuring the ratio of intensity of the transmission light with respect to the incident light and a damage detection method using the same.;SOLUTION: One optical fiber is so arranged to form a part covered with a protective member for blocking the transmission of a stress from a set object to be measured and a part with the optical fiber exposed to transmit the stress from the object. The optical fiber for detecting damage is set on the object to be measured and when no light incident from one end of the optical fiber is detected, the part with the optical fiber exposed is estimated to be damaged and by the contrary, when the light incident from the one end of the optical fiber is detected, at least the object is not damaged or the part fitted with the protective part of the optical fiber is estimated to be damaged.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
