PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an AB5 type hydrogen absorbing/storing alloy which, when used in practice as a battery cathode, enables highly efficient discharge or high power discharge from batteries. SOLUTION: This AB5 type alloy for hydrogen absorption and storage is a Nickel alloy, and its overall composition is made up of 27-38 wt.% rare earth elements mainly comprising La and/or Ce, 0.1-17 wt.%; Co, 0.1-3.5 wt.% Al, 0.5-10 wt.% Mn, 0.05-5 wt.% Ti, 0.005-0.2 wt.% H and Ni and some unavoidable impurities as remainder. Furthermore, the base material for AB5 type alloy contains minute intermetallic compounds and Ti-based hydrides diffused in the structure.
