PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen gas filling device and method removing poisoning gas contained in gaseous hydrogen and preventing a hydrogen storage alloy in a hydrogen storage tank from being poisoned by air mixed when supplying gaseous hydrogen. SOLUTION: This device for filling the hydrogen storage alloy type hydrogen storage tank 3 with gaseous hydrogen has a filter device 5 including the hydrogen storage alloy 63 detachably attached in a halfway of a pipe 4 connecting the hydrogen storage tank 3 to a gaseous hydrogen filling inlet 6. The hydrogen storage alloy 63 in the filter device 5 has an impurity gas absorption performance higher than that of the hydrogen storage alloy 31 in the hydrogen storage tank 3 and has high hydrogen emission equilibrium pressure. This property makes the hydrogen storage alloy 63 to be preferentially poisoned to prevent the hydrogen storage alloy 31 from being poisoned.
