PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wire rope which can reduce wear caused by abrasions between steel wires or between a steel wire and a surface of sheaves, and has an improved bending fatigue strength, excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance, to provide the steel wire for the wire rope, and to provide a steel material used for producing the steel wire.;SOLUTION: This steel wire characterized by satisfying 0.30 to 1.2 wt.% of C, ≤0.40 wt.% (excluding 0 wt.%) of Si, and 0.20 to 1.20 wt.% of Mn, and being subjected to a patenting treatment or subjecting to the patenting treatment and an acid-washing treatment, and then used as a wire for the outer layer of a wire rope without being subjected to a drawing processing.
