PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound that has a large refractometoric anisotropy, can easily be mixed with other liquid crystals, is excellent in photostability and has a enough short absorption wavelength at an ultraviolet area to be practically out of the question, and also provide a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal element which can be used for an optical shutter, a displaying element and the like.;SOLUTION: This compound is a compound represented by formula (1) having a phenylacetylene structure with a skeletal structure, where HOMO energy difference ΔE between each of the parts represented by formulas (1-1) to (1-3) in formula (1) found by the molecular orbital method calculation is 0.3 electron volt or larger and a polarizability anisotropy Δα found in the same manner as the above for the molecule represented by formula (1) is 500 (atomic unit) or larger. In formulas, A1 to A4 are independently H, F or a 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy group which may be substituted with F, and P1 and P2 are each a structure which satisfies the conditions of the HOMO energy and polarizability.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
