PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for a liquid crystal aligning film which ensures good aligning function independently of rubbing conditions, a liquid crystal aligning film using the composition and giving an image of high image quality, liquid crystal holding substrates, a liquid crystal display and a horizontal electric field liquid crystal display.;SOLUTION: The composition contains a polyimide having repeating units of formula (I) (where W is a tetravalent organic group and R is a divalent organic group) or its precursor. At least part of the repeating units have a specified divalent organic group as the symbol R. The liquid crystal aligning film is obtained by rubbing a polyimide film formed from the composition. Each of the liquid crystal holding substrates has the liquid crystal aligning film. Each of the liquid crystal display and the horizontal electric field liquid crystal display has the liquid crystal holding substrates.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
