PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-thio-substituted phenol and a 4-thio-substituted 1-naphthol derivative containing a water-soluble group at a thioalkyl part of the 4-position in a high yield and simply.;SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4-thio-substituted phenol of general formula (III-a) or a 1-naphthol compound of general formula (III-b) comprises reacting a phenol compound of general formula (I-a) or a n-naphthol compound of general formula (I-b) with a thiosulfonate of general formula (II) in the presence of a base (R1 is a group substitutable with an aromatic ring; R2 is an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic residue; R3 and R4 may be the same or different, are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, a heterocyclic group, a hydroxy group or carboxy group and may be mutually boned to form a ring; n is an integer of 0-4; m is an integer of 0-6; when n or m is two or more, R1s may be the same or different and may be mutually bonded to form a ring; X is a water-soluble group).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
