A process and compounds are provided to inhibit the synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins. The compounds of the invention comprise specific oligonucleotides for nuclear proto-oncogenes. Preferably, the oligonucleotides of the invention are selected from the group consisting of c-myc and c-myb and are administered locally. The invention finds use in the treatment of a variety of disorders, including sclerotic disorders and restenosis, associated with the inappropriate synthesis of proteins in the extracellular matrix, particularly collagen.
