A catalyst on a support for the selective oxidation of sulphur-containing compounds to elemental sulphur comprises catalytically active material(s) on the support material. The catalytically active material(s) ia mixed oxide with oxidic lattice in which two metal ions are included. The catalyst is prepared by applying compounds of the metals to the surface of a support material, drying and calcination of the support. During the calcination an amount of halogenide is present on the support material. A method for the selective oxidation of sulphur-containing compound, especially hydrogen sulphide, using the catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas at elevated temperature is also claimed.
