MAG expression promoters containing compounds represented by general formula (I), optically active isomers thereof or pharmaceutically acceptable salts of the same, wherein each symbol is as defined in the description. As an example of the compounds represented by the general formula (I), 4-[α-hydroxy-5-(1-imidazoyl)-2-methylbenzyl]-3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid may be cited.
