It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for hydrogenolysis of petroleum-based heavy oil such as vacuum distillation residue oil to obtain light gas oil, capable of suppressing accumulation of coke or the like and continuously operating for a long time and capable of obtaining light gas oil highly cracked, desulfurized and denitrified at a low cost and in a high yield. This method for hydrogenolysis of petroleum-based oil is characterized by comprising a first reaction process wherein a raw material slurry containing the heavy oil and a limonite ore catalyst and hydrogen gas are fed into a suspended bed reactor to subject the heavy oil to hydrogenolysis, a second process wherein gas phase of the effluent of the reactor is fed to fixed bed reactor filled with Ni-Mo or Co-Mo based catalyst to be hydrogenated, a distillation process of the liquid phase reaction product in the effluent of the reactor and recycling process wherein a liquid phase in the effluent of the reactor and a heavy component in the liquid phase are recycled to the first reaction process.
