The installation for loading goods into and discharging goods from a ship, particularly palletized cargo, has a support unit (A) movable along a quay, on which is a projecting load arm (B), along which a crab (11) with lifting devices is movable. Devices are provided for covering the loading/discharge hatch aperture. The crab is suspended high within the load arm. The load arm at its free end is open downwards and for covering over a hatch opening is widened or can be made so. The running crab is provided with a pivot arm (12), the free end of which is equipped with the lifting equipment (13).
