The method and equipment for loading and discharge of an inland waterway ship (1) move cargo from a quay (2) to a hold (4) or vice versa, the cargo being divided into units, such as palletized goods, big bags, rolls of paper, packeted timber and similar. The cargo is picked up at a storage location by a first displaceable transport device located in the hold or on the quay. It is set down on a support structure (7,8) between the hold and the quay and which has a locating and pick-up surface. The locating and pick-up surface is situated at a level above both the upper side of the hold and the surface of the quay. The cargo is picked up by a further displaceable transport device located on the quay or in the hold and conveyed from the support structure to a required setting-down location.
