In order to simplify manufacture of a polyphase transverse flux DC motor first and second complementary stator pieces are designed with alternating claw poles. Magnetically permeable bridging cores are disposed about the stator axis proximate to the claw poles. These are located between the stator pieces to provide magnetic flux paths therebetween. At least one stator piece is provided in the regions of high reluctance between the bridging cores. Stator windings are disposed about each bridging core, each of which when supplied with an exciting current produce flux flow through the stator claw poles. Flux is thus provided in the air gap between stator and rotor adjacent the claw poles. Each winding or selected set of windings corresponds to a motor phase, each of which is electronically commutated, to provide a rotary flux.
