The use of Bacillus thuringiensis PS66D3 for controlling homopteran pests

A method for controlling a homopteran insect pest comprises contacting the pest with a toxin obtained from a Bacillus thuringiensis isolate selected from the group consisting of HD969, PS66D3 and PS50C and is toxic to a homopteran insect pest. The toxin can be expressed in plant cells and may be a Cryl1B toxin obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis isolate HD969. Also disclosed is the gene encoding a toxin obtained from the Bacillus thuringiensis isolates of HD969 or DPS66D3 or a homopteran-active portion of the toxin and a host cell transformed with a toxin obtained from a Bacillus thuringiensis isolate or a homopteran-active portion of the toxin wherein the toxin is toxic to homopteran insect pests.
