An apparatus is mounted on a container so that a thermometer or temperature sensor sends its readings of the temperature within the container to a voice synthesizer 16, which converts the reading into an audible message or a signal representing an audible message. The message is then sent to a radio transceiver such as a cellular phone. The message is received by a central monitoring unit with speech recognition capabilities 12 which can store details of the temperature readings for future reference. The monitoring unit can receive data from several temperature sensors, and can regularly interrogate the sensors. Users can send requests for temperature data to the monitoring unit. The monitoring unit can also alert users if the temperature moves outside set limits. By sending the signal as a voiced message rather than as a telemetry type data signal, the message is more immune degradation across the noisy radio transmission.
