A polyacrylamide gel is useful in the preparation of a medicament for introducing into the tissue of a mammal to form a connective tissue capsule. Transplanted heterologous cells are then inserted into the capsule formed in the mammal and the cells are cultivated. The transplanted cells produce biologically active components, induce immunity or supplement levels of a substance that is either deficient or absent in the mammal. It is useful for the treatment of diabetes mellitus whereby the cells may be pancreatic b-cells and in treatment of cancer Also described is a method of cultivating heterologous cells within a non-human mammal, which comprises introducing into the tissue a polyacrylamide gel that forms a connective tissue capsule and subsequently introducing the heterologous cells into the capsule.
