A dog-walking lead (3) extends from a housing (4) with hand-grip (5) pulled by the animal. The extent to which the lead is withdrawn is controlled by a thumb-operated brake (9) button with associated swivel lock lever (2). When in the locked position (Z) the brake lever (2) stands clear of the brake button. The brake-lock swivel lever (2) is a two-armed lever (11) rotating on a pinion against the housing (4). The first arm (111) has a thumb operated tip (13); the second arm (112) acts on the brake (9) ratchet (14). When the first arm (111) is swivelled (S) away from the brake (9), the ratchet (14) recess (27) locks the brake (9), facilitating movement of the first arm (111) in the opposite direction.
