The invention relates to a process of organic electrochemical synthesis of 1,1' dimethyl 4,4' bipyridine iodide. The process takes place in an electrolysis cell endowed with lead electrodes and provided with a polyurethane membrane separating the cathodic space from the anodic space. An aqueous solution of methylpyridine iodide, having a concentration of 0.5-1M and pH between 8 and 12, obtained using a pyridine solution, is introduced in the cathodic space and an aqueous solution of NaClO4, having a concentration of 0.2...0.9M, is introduced as a base electrolyte, in the anodic space. The two compartments are provided with propeller-type stirrers. The solution resulting in the cathodic space is further subjected to separation by evaporation to dryness and acetone retake.
