Morphine reductase enzyme is described, which 1) reduces morphinone to hydromorphone, 2) with the same cofactor, also reduces codeinone and neopinone, but has no substantial enzymatic activity in the opposite direction, 3) has a molecular weight of approximately 81,000 determined by gel filtration, and 4) in phosphate buffer, has a maximum activity at a pH of about 8.0
