A discharge tube (1) with electrodes (5,6) is connected in parallel with resistor (10) and diode (11) in series with an inductor (3) connected via an on-off switch (8) joined to one side (2b) of an AC supply (2), and a capacitor (9) connected to the other supply terminal (2a). A resistor (12) may be paralleled with the capacitor. The resistor and diode (10,11) provides the high voltage for starting. The resistor has a very high resistance and the diode has a very low amperage. The capacitor limits the current and contributes to a high voltage applied to the discharge tube.
