The device is for the automatic stopping and/or reversing of a table top (1) ascending movement to counteract a jamming tendency, with the table being raisable and lowerable by electric motor drive (3). At least one column leg (2) is mechanically raisable and lowerable and is fixed to a load cell, which in turn is either fixed to the table top or against a static part of the construction. The load cell adjustable finely sensitive measurement mechanism, eg. a wire stretching indicator, is series-coupled and connected to a control electronic unit, so that during level adjustment, it continuously measures and monitors, with momentary reversal and/or stoppage of the table top movement upwards or downwards at the slightest load deviation (7).
