A disc having recordable and recorded areas discretelyscattered over it at the same time is formed with aguard band to prevent the recorded area from beingdestroyed by a track jump caused by an undue impact orvibration applied to the disc during a recordingoperation. Additionally, storing in memory informationof an edge of a recorded area by a predetermined amountbefore recording, the edge providing a boundary betweenthe recorded area and a recordable area, allows recoveryof data in the recorded area destroyed by a track jumpcaused by an undue impact or vibration applied to adisc.
