A payment processing system includes a data center (200), a postage metering system (10a, 10b) and a control system (202) in operative communication with the data center (200) and the postage metering system (10a, 10b). The postage metering system (10a, 10b) is located remotely from the data center (200). The control system (202) obtains payment data via the postage metering system (10a, 10b) where the payment data includes a payee (310), a payment amount and a source of funds (320) for the payment amount to be drawn from. Further, the control system (202) arranges for payment to the payee (310) for the payment amount.
