The invention relates to a manipulator for positioning surgical instruments on patients in a magnetic resonance tomograph (MRI) or computer tomograph (CT) machine, comprising a pivoting, turning, tilting and mobile manipulator arm, a mounting for said manipulator arm, a manipulator head, arranged on the distal end of said manipulator arm, and at least one surgical instrument which is pivotably mounted on the manipulator head. The aim of the invention is to develop and improve the operation of said manipulator such that it may find universal application in CT or MRI as, in particular, the support system for the remote controlled image-supported procedures on patients, without changing the position in which the patient is lying on the patient support. Said aim is achieved, whereby the mounting for the manipulator arm is a carriage which may be motor-driven around an arched support and the manipulator arm or manipulator head comprises a safety device for a rapid manual removal of the surgical instrument from the patient.
