A process for producing a gel sheet for application to the living body which comprises mixing a water-soluble synthetic polymer having anionic functional groups with a polyfunctional cationic compound capable of crosslinking the polymer in the presence of an aqueous medium to obtain a gel-forming mixture, forming the resultant mixture into a sheet on a substrate or in a casting mold at the time when the viscosity of the mixture has reached a value of 1,000 to 50,000 mPa.s, and causing the mixture to crosslink completely in that state. Thus, a gel sheet for application to the living body is obtained which comprises a transparent or translucent polymer gel.
