A method for processing and optimizing an intermediate frequency estimated bit error rate function ("analog BER") in a digital radio transmission system using space and/or angle diversity at the receiver. A minimum value of the analog BER function is found and it is then analysed to determine whether it represents merely a relative minimum detrimental to the radio link operation or an absolute minimum representing the best conditions achievable on the link. In other words there may be values of the analog BER function indicating a relative minimum which may signal an "out of order" of the link, while the absolute minimum may be a value for which the link does not degrade. Thereby the overall outage time may be reduced. IMAGE
