C-alkylation of malonic acid dialkyl esters (I) is carried out by reacting (I) with an alkyl halide or a 1,2-alkylene dihalide in an inert solvent and in the presence of potassium carbonate as an HCl acceptor. When (I) has undergone 50-80% reaction, a phase transfer catalyst is added.
